It seems as though you can live in an area for your whole life and still not know everything there is to know about it. When we’re planning a vacation or far off getaway, we always love to plan, plan, plan. This includes all the administrative stuff like booking hotels and figuring out transportation, but also all the fun stuff like looking up events, activities, and other fun things to do while we’re away! Researching awesome events and nearby attractions sometimes falls by the wayside when we’re sitting at home, though. Surely we know everything we need to about the area… we’ve lived here for years, after all! If there’s one thing we’ve decided, it’s that this is often not the case at all. There are so many amazing things to do in and around Waterloo Region that it would be almost impossible to know them all! That’s why we’ve worked to compile a list of 6 awesome and adventurous day trips from Waterloo Region… hopefully, there will be one or two items on this list that you’ve never heard of!
#1: Go Ziplining at the Scenic Caves
The Scenic Caves in Collingwood are a great place to spend an active and fun-filled day! Go spelunking in beautiful caves with family and friends, hike around the beautiful trails, and get your blood flowing. For an extra thrill, check out their Thunderbird zip line! The 2550 foot long zip line is the longest in Canada, and is sure to get your heart pumping. For those with young children, there are plenty of kid friendly parks, train rides, and other activities (as well as exploring the caves, of course). Grab family and friends, pack a few water bottles, and head to Collingwood for this active and adventurous day trip.
#2: Go for a Swim at Bronte Creek
Have you ever been inside an outdoor pool designed to look and feel more like a lake? If not, Bronte Creek in Oakville may just be the day trip for you. With super low admission prices ($3.75 for adults), 5.8 million litres of water, and surrounding grassy knowls for laying out your towel, this outdoor pool offers a day of sun and relaxation. Pack a picnic, or pick up some lunch and an ice cream from the park store!
#3: Go Tubing at Elora Gorge
Tubing through the river at the Elora Gorge is another great outdoor activity for those who love adventure. Strap on your life jackets and get pulled away through the tides with this fun summer attraction. Tubing at the Elora Gorge is subject to weather conditions and is open from late June to August or early September. Beyond tubing, the Elora Quarry has beautiful hiking trails and a scenic beach perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and tossing a frisbee around.
#4: Chase Waterfalls in Hamilton
There are plenty of beautiful hiking trails and scenic views all throughout Ontario, and the beautiful trails in Hamilton are no exception. Chances are you’ve seen photos of a friend or acquaintance at the popular photo spot on Dundas Peak, but this is just one of many gorgeous views from the surrounding trails. Tews, Tiffany, and Webster falls are just a few of the beautiful falls you’ll encounter in the much-loved hiking trails by the Hamilton escarpment.
#5: Go for a Hot Air Balloon Ride
Hot air ballooning may seem like a faraway adventure, but the truth is there are balloon rides departing from all kinds of destinations in and around Waterloo Region, including Victoria Park and the Concordia Club! Take to the web to discover what company you want to fly with, as there are many available in the area. Choose a sunrise or sunset flight for an even more beautiful experience, and get a brand new and amazing view of Waterloo Region from the air!
#6: Go Canoeing in Algonquin Park
Or, better yet, take a couple of days to go camping in a beautiful and secluded spot! Algonquin park, with its stunning views, calm waters for canoeing, and breathtaking natural wonders might just be our favourite place in the area to go camping. For those more pressed for time, a quick day trip to go canoeing in this gorgeous park is well worth your while. Bring a friend or family and get lost in nature.
Bring on Summer!
