Whether you’re committed to teaching your dog every trick in the book, or simply want a few simple commands to make life easier, these are great commands to start with. Although there are many different tricks to teach your dog, these 5 are some of the most important for keeping your dog safe and well trained.
Cesar’s 5 Essential Commands for your Dog
Number one on Cesar’s list is the command to “sit.” This is usually the easiest command to teach your dog, and will probably be the very first command that you teach. Make sure to use positive reinforcement!
Cesar considers this command to be important so that you can call your dog to you at any time. For example, if the door gets left open or your pup spies another dog across the street, you want to be able to call him to your side.
As Cesar points out, “down” can be one of the more difficult commands for your dog to learn. He says this is because it is a submissive posture, and may therefore make your dog feel intimidated or vulnerable. When teaching this command, it is important to stay calm, positive, and relaxed, to make your dog more comfortable.
Stay is another important command to teach your pup. This one may be difficult for more hyperactive or energetic dogs, especially young puppies. It is a difficult test of their patience, so be sure to maintain your own!
5. Leave It
Cesar states that this command is fairly difficult, but incredibly useful to prevent your dog from eating or grabbing things that could be harmful to them. This is a many step training process, but well worth the work!
