The next time you head for a cup of joe at home or out and about, consider adding one of these treats for the perfect snack or pick me up. These decadent sweet, salty, and savoury pairings can get you through a particularly dull Wednesday, or help you greet a wonderfully lazy Sunday in style!
1: Stroopwafels (pictured)
If you’ve never had a stroopwafel, then we already know two things. One, this name looks impossibly funny to you. And two, you are absolutely missing out! Stroopwafels are a Dutch waffle-like dessert. A stroopwafel essentially consists of two ultra thin waffled baked dough with a caramel-like syrup in the middle. You can buy this tasty treat at the St. Jacobs Farmer’s Market, or in small clear bags at most grocery stores. (Or, if you’re headed out of town, try purchasing some from Holland Store in North York, Toronto).
2: Delicia and Cinnamon Tart
Have you ever been to Nova Era? This delicious Portuguese bakery is situated right across from the Kitchener Market, and is a must try for their fabulous pastries. You can sample all manner of creations from a classic bolo de arroz (Portuguese rice cake) to a simple cream-stuffed cannoli. However, we recommend trying out the many-layered delicia, or a cinnamon tart for a perfect cinnamon-coffee flavour pairing. Happy pastry hunting!
3: GIANT Waffles!
For enormous, fully loaded waffles and a fresh cup of coffee, head down to the Settlement Co. in Kitchener. These waffles are so big they even offer the option to buy 1/4 of one, “the snacker.” Toppings such as whipped peanut butter, prosciutto, and beer stout whipped cream make these waffles extra special. Drop by and try one with your morning coffee this weekend!
4: Soft Pretzels
Time to add some salt to the list! There are a few places to find giant soft pretzels in KW. Try the Yeti, Nougat bakery, or the Concordia Club for delicious, salty, pretzel goodness! Or, you can always make your own simple pretzels at home. Whatever your choice, pretzels are great for pairing with coffee! The dense, salty pastry will compliment your brew nicely, whether for breakfast or an afternoon snack.
These delicate french pastries are only made by one bakery in Waterloo Region… Ambrosia! The soft pastry is a specialty of the Bordeaux region of France, and combines a thick honey caramelized crust with a sweet custard center. Ambrosia is only open on Saturday mornings from 10am-3pm, so you’ll have to plan ahead to get your hands on these pastries. Let us know what you think!
