Nobody likes bills. Luckily, in the case of your hydro bill, you may have more control over your charges than you think. Your electricity is actually charged at different rates depending on when you use it. Making an effort to confine your usage to off-peak times can have a drastic effect on your electricity bill. If you live in Kitchener-Waterloo, these are the best times to use hydro, and the rates for usage on and off peak.
Off-peak hours are the times when you want to do the majority of high-consumption activities, such as laundry, running the dishwasher, and so on. Off-peak rates come in the lowest at only 7.7 cents/kWh (kilowatt hour).
- Weekends & Holiday: all day
- Weekdays: 7:00pm to 7:00am
In other words, off-peak hours actually correspond fairly strongly to the hours when you are likely to be home. Running the dryer overnight, rather than during the day while you’re away at work, is one simple way to reduce your electricity costs.
Mid-peak hours are more expensive than off-peak, but still cheaper than electricity usage during peak hours. Doing routine activities like having a hot shower in the morning or preparing dinner when you get home from work is sensible, as the amount you will save by trying to switch these activities to correspond with off-peak hours is not necessarily worth it. Mid-peak rates come in at 11.3 cents/kWh (kilowatt hour).
- Weekdays 7:00am to 11:00am
- Weekdays 5:00pm to 7:00pm
Chances are, your morning routine and dinner preparation fall within these hours. They will therefore cost you more than they might if you changed your schedule to fit off-peak times, but it depends on how much you want to compromise for a slight reduction in your monthly bill.
These are the hours you may actually want to make a concerted effort to avoid. On-peak hours are targeted at companies and businesses who make up the majority of electricity usage. These hours come in at 15.7 cents/kWh (kilowatt hour).
- Weekdays 11:00am to 5:00pm
Chances are you will be away at work or school during these times. However, if you have an irregular schedule, these are the hours to really look out for. Electricity usage at these times will cost you more than twice as much as the same usage during off-peak hours.
