Everybody looks forward to the weekend- and this month, there’s a long weekend to get excited about! This year, Family Day falls on February 20th. The extra day off holds different possibilities for different people. If you have young children or grandchildren, it can mean a whole day of activities and fun! For University aged students, it’s the beginning of the Spring reading week. And, for those without children, it can be a whole day for friends, significant others, and rest. No matter what Family Day offers for you, there are great events across the region for all ages!
For the Kids
For those celebrating with younger children, there are a wide variety of community and family friendly events available. Various community centres in Kitchener are offering free events that include skating, make your own hot chocolate bars, indoor games and crafts, and movie nights! Check your local community centre to see what they have planned, or browse through various choices here!
For those in the Waterloo area, don’t miss the chance to come out to our very own Winterloo Winter festival! Winterloo is taking place all weekend in the West side of Waterloo Park, as well as at various UpTown Waterloo BIA businesses. Participate in zombie survival, take a ride down the ice slide, and catch a puppet show at the train station! There’s plenty to do for all ages.
Spending the weekend with your special someone? You may be all romanced out after Valentine’s day, but there are plenty of great options for a fun and casual date. Stop by Winterloo to try your hand at archery, snowshoeing, and test out the interesting new bicycles meant for winter riding! There are also plenty of free skates happening all weekend long, with Skate Night Date Night finishing off the week on Friday the 24th at Waterloo Public Square. At the end of an adventurous day spent outside, we suggest warming up with a steaming mug of hot chocolate… or maybe something stiffer! Take a look at some of our suggested restaurants for ideas!
Well, actually… we love any and all of our “date night” ideas for friends, as well! (Although you may want to leave Skate Night Date Night for the couples). On top of this, you can check out the chili cook-off at Chainsaw, and movie screenings at the Princess Cinemas. When all is said and done, a Monday holiday offers a great opportunity to check out weekday specials at local restaurants. Try out the $8 Margherita Pizza at Famoso, or $4 Burger (with drink purchase) at Ethel’s. What better way to top off the long weekend than with some great food and drink?
No matter what you do for the Family Day weekend, it is best spent with those you love. Happy long weekend!
