Lawn care season is baack! We certainly aren’t complaining. The long days of sunshine and evenings on the patio are well worth a little bit of toil in the yard. For those who live in apartments or condos, mowing the lawn may be completely absent from your spring routine. However, if you do have a yard that you’re responsible for maintaining, why not try to make it look as nice as possible? You’ll appreciate the extra touch it adds to your home. These quick tips will help you keep your lawn healthy and green for spring!
- Sharpen your mower’s blades. If the blades aren’t sharp, you run the risk of tearing your grass instead of cutting it. Although this may not sound so bad, the end result is that dreaded dull brown colour and a lawn that is more susceptible to disease.
- Set your blades to a lower setting. The first time you mow your lawn, you’ll want to have a lower setting to allow sun, nutrients, and water to reach the base of your grass blades. Over the next few weeks, you can raise these settings until they rest somewhere between two and a half and three inches. (This height protects your grass and their root systems from the hot summer sun).
- Don’t remove more than 1/3 of the blade length. If you remove more than this, or mow your lawn too often, you can actually put your grass in shock. End result: unhealthy grass, dead brown patches, and an ugly lawn!
